What Is Direct
Primary Care?

A happy couple holding their baby in a cozy kitchen, surrounded by wooden cabinets and a potted plant.

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a membership-based model designed to provide personalized and accessible healthcare for your child. With no copays or surprise charges, DPC allows for a straightforward and transparent approach to pediatric care. Importantly, visits are not billed to insurance, which means you and Dr. Arana can focus on your child’s health without worrying about hidden costs or complicated billing processes.

  • DPC is a great fit for families who value a strong relationship with their pediatrician and want easier access to care. This model especially benefits:

    • Parents who prefer direct access to their own pediatrician – DPC eliminates the need to navigate through multiple layers of phone trees or messaging systems, saving parents valuable time.

    • Parents seeking fixed, predictable healthcare costs – With DPC, there are no copays or hidden fees, which makes budgeting easier and reduces unexpected medical costs.

    • Families with high-deductible insurance plans – DPC membership covers routine and minor visits without the high out-of-pocket costs often associated with high-deductible plans.

    • Families experiencing changes in insurance or employment – DPC provides consistent, ongoing care, even if your insurance or job situation changes.

    • Parents who want longer, unrushed appointments – We take time to address all your questions and concerns during each visit.

    • Families who need flexible, timely scheduling – Same day appointments with minimal or no wait time.

  • DPC allows us to keep a much smaller patient panel, meaning we have more time to focus on each child. This results in longer appointments “when you need them”, minimal wait times, and a focus on building a trusted relationship with you and your family.

  • You pay a flat monthly fee that covers all included services, so there are no additional fees for visits or hidden costs. This structure gives you more control and predictability over your healthcare expenses.

  • DPC emphasizes accessibility and consistency. If a concern comes up, you can text, email, or schedule a visit promptly with your pediatrician who knows you best. This access ensures your questions are answered quickly, saving time and reducing stress.

  • In the traditional healthcare model, health systems and doctors are paid only for scheduled visits, creating pressure for unnecessary appointments. Direct Primary Care (DPC) uses a flat monthly fee, allowing many issues to be managed via phone or messaging without the need for a real-time scheduled visit. This approach simplifies life for busy families by eliminating the hesitation to seek help, enabling you to ask questions freely without the stress of scheduling an appointment or worrying about the cost.

  • DPC is not a replacement for insurance. You will still use your insurance if your child needs specialist evaluation, medications, labs, X-rays, or emergency care.

    • Dr. Arana believes in and encourages vaccines but does accommodate to families that wish an alternative vaccine schedule or do not vaccinate.

    • We are currently establishing a relationship with Vaxcare but are unable to give vaccines for now.

    • Once able, vaccines will be billed through your insurance.
